This study, conducted along the year 2003, was held in the environment of a cement company plant located in the São Paulo State. That industry has used carbon black as predominant energetic source which besides resulting a huge emission of gases (CO and CO2) into the atmosphere, has been more expensive than some other alternatives of biomass sources. Taking into consideration the location of that plant, there was a large supply of available biomass to be used as alternative fuel for industrial ovens. Several biomasses were analyzed and it was concluded that the sugar cane bagasse and residues of wood (sawdust and woodchips) were the most appropriate alternatives to such an industry.

A variação...

Szecsei, Timea; Salamon, Lajos.

BIO-ENERGY FROM WINERY BY-PRODUCTS: A NEW MULTIFUNCTIONAL TOOL FOR THE ITALIAN WINE DISTRICTS AgEcon
Begalli, Diego; Codurri, Stefano; Gaeta, Davide.
This paper aims to investigate if the legislation will allow the production of energy from winery by-products and how this can contribute to multifunctionality of the wine makers’ income. A medium size winery was selected and an anaerobic digestor process was simulated using the company’s data. The main methods of financial evaluation were studied to create information to see if the project concepts were valid. The results highlight the positive level of earnings that the project will generate due to the high level of methane included in the pressings that could be transformed in energy, the short period needed for obtaining methane and the recent substantial level of government support both in Green Certificates and financing of the initial cost of the...

Biogas and Biomass Implementation in Rural Areas BABT
Sandim,Álvaro A.; Batista,Alexandre G.; Bareta,Maria Luiza E.; Betini,Roberto C.; Pepplow,Luiz Amilton.
Abstract Advances in energy demand in rural areas cannot be dissociated from agricultural modernization, large estates, mechanization of labor and reduced investment in small production. The use of biogas together with biomass are the most cost-effective ways for the small producer, as it has a high calorific value. In the case of biogas the procedure is performed by combining a compressor and a chiller, allowing the gas enter the reactor and burn together with the air stream. The use of these techniques is an auxiliary way to reduce the cost of the producer to produce a certain crop, besides allowing a participation in the final energy supply, so that the utilities have an alternative to distribute the surplus energy to another region, serving thus a...

Biological characteristics of a hydrothermal edifice mosaic community ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Juniper, Sk.
This study defines the composition and biomass characteristics of 5 of 6 previously described faunal assemblages that form a mosaic community on hydrothermal sulfide edifices of the Juan de Fuca Ridge (northeast Pacific). Quantitative samples of each assemblage were acquired during 'ROPOS' Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) dive programs in 1994 and 1996. Total abundance, and species richness, as well as wet and dry weights, were calculated for each assemblage, and sampled surface area was measured directly or from scaled images of sample scars. These data were used to compare species composition, richness and biomass of the distinct assemblages and to estimate total biomass of a sulfide edifice. In addition to major compositional differences, we observed an...

Hozbor, M.C.; Hernández, D.R.; Cucchi Colleoni, A.D.; Costagliola, M.C.; Peressutti, S.R..
The northern sector of the Argentine continental shelf (34º S-41º S) is a highly productive area that sustains important fishery resources like Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) and is characterized by the presence of frontal zones with retention of detritus and plankton. In marine environments the bacterioplankton represents one of the main components of the trophic nets and plays a key role in biogeochemical cycles. In this ecosystem biomass and bacterioplankton distribution as well as their relation to environmental variables were analyzed. The highest chlorophyll a values, not significantly related to bacterioplankton (p > 0.05), were found in frontal and coastal areas. Abundance, bacterial biomass and cell volume values ranged 0.48-5.42 x 106...

Biomass partitioning and leaf area of Pinus radiata trees subjected to silvopastoral and conventional forestry in the VI region, Chile RChHN
RODRÍGUEZ,ROLANDO; HOFMANN,GLENN; ESPINOSA,MIGUEL; RÍOS,DARCY.
The effects of silvicultural regimes on leaf area and biomass distribution were analyzed in 16-year old Pinus radiata trees growing in the semiarid zone of Chile. Three stands with different silvopastoral management were compared with a conventionally managed stand. Data were obtained through destructive sampling of 36 trees and analyzed by MANOVA and regression models of ANCOVA. Results show that the management regime affects the leaf area. Specific leaf area was affected by both silvicultural regime and crown position. Total biomass per tree under the silvopastoral regime was 2.1 to 2.5 times larger than in the conventional forestry regime. However, aboveground biomass partitioning was neither affected by the silvicultural regime nor by the schemes of...
